Energy bars are a convenient, on-the-go snack to toss in your purse, diaper bag, or gym bag, but they can be full of unhealthy ingredients including added sugar. So simple to make, and costs a lot less than the store-purchased variety. Although these may look like a yummy snack or dessert, this energy bar is perfect for breakfast, too.

Heart Healthy Chocolate Energy Bars
1-½ C. pitted dates
⅓ C. raw cacao
⅓ C. chia seeds
1 tsp. vanilla extract
⅓ C. unsweetened coconut flakes
¼ tsp. Himalayan pink sea salt
1 C. walnut pieces
¼ C. chopped dark chocolate or dark chocolate chips
⅓ C. oats

Place dates in blender or food processor; purée until a thick paste forms. Add cacao powder, chia seeds, vanilla, coconut, and salt. Pulse until all ingredients are combined.

Remove mixture from food processor and place into a bowl. Mix in walnuts, chocolate, and oats.

Cut a considerable length of wax paper and place one end of it into an 8×8 pan. Press mixture into pan.

Once it’s pressed into all corners, flip it over and remove from the pan. Wrap the block tightly with the excess wax paper and place in the refrigerator overnight.

In the morning, unwrap the block and cut into bars. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

Most processed breakfast sausages contain Sodium Nitrate and Sodium Nitrite. These harmful ingredients are not only cause cancer, but they sabotage our weight loss by adding toxins to the liver—our main fat-burning organ. Read more on the dangers of processed meats.

This recipe has become a family favorite! We enjoy the patties but this recipe is also great in your favorite egg scramble or casserole recipes. These yummy sausage patties also freeze well for a quick breakfast on those busy mornings!

Nutritional yeast, which is also known as Brewer’s yeast, is a deactivated form of yeast that doesn’t foam or froth, making it different from the yeast you would use to make dough ferment or rise. Although it’s common in the vegan and vegetarian world (sometimes lovingly referred to as “nooch”), it is a very healthy addition to anyone’s diet.

It is gluten-free, low in fat, and low in sodium. It is a complete protein (which means a good source of essential and non-essential amino acids) and contains a wealth of B vitamins, including B-12 which aids in managing stress levels. Rich in folic acid, it aids in maintaining optimum cholesterol levels and is great for those with diabetes.

One tablespoon of a cup of nutritional yeast contains 22 calories, 4 grams of protein, and 2.5 grams of carbs – 2 of which are dietary fiber – so that means 0.5 grams of net carbs. So watch your portion and use as a spice in phase 2 so you are using spice calorie amounts. Use more liberally in phase 3.

Nutritional yeast is a delicious way to infuse flavor in a variety of meals and add numerous health benefits. Its nutty, cheese-like flavor has been popular for those wanting to make healthier choices. Introduce it to your diet gradually – too much too quickly can lead to gas and bloating, and nobody wants that!

One tip for using this amazing supplement is to take an old shaker bottle (like you’d use for Parmesan cheese) and fill it up and then you can spoon it out or shake it on!

Some suggestions for sprinkling on the nutrition and flavor:

Sprinkle it in your scrambled eggs or omelets

Add it to your soups to add creamier texture

Blend into your favorite salad dressing recipe or sprinkle over your salad

Sprinkle over cooked vegetables – beans, cauliflower, spinach, zucchini “noodles” etc.

Combine with LCE seasonings for a delicious flavor boost

Mix into meatloaf, meatballs or hamburger patties

Add to your favorite casseroles – kids love it!

Blend into baked goods such as muffins and breads

Mix in cooked quinoa for an extra nutty flavor

Sprinkle on pasta or rice dishes with dried parsley as a garnish

Sprinkle on popcorn – probably the most popular way to eat it!

Mix in vegetable dips to add a nutty/cheese flavor

Top off soups with a generous shake on top

It is sold in the form of flakes or as a powder. You can buy it in the bulk section at Whole Foods or Sprouts. Order my favorite brand online here.

I LOVE breakfast foods so much and I even often eat breakfast foods for dinner! In a recent post I touch on why we should have eggs on a regular basis, especially when detoxing. But when I made a healthy decision to not consume processed meats, that meant no bacon or sausage with breakfast. Read more on the dangers of processed meats. So, when my friend Laura gave me a breakfast sausage recipe, I was very excited! I’ve adapted her recipe a bit, but it’s pretty close. I’m not a rosemary fan, so I omitted the rosemary, but if you are add it back in! I made it with one pound of meat, but it’s so good you’ll want to double it the next time! I buy the big packages of ground turkey at Sam’s Club and make a huge batch. It freezes well for a quick breakfast on those busy mornings!

They are high in protein and fiber, no added sodium and have a lower calorie count. Usually they take about 45 minutes to cook and you need to constantly watch and stir while cooking on stove top. Using a slow cooker is easy and a healthy breakfast will be ready when you wake up.

Overnight Apple Cinnamon Oats

1 3/4 C. Steel Cut Oats
4 C purified water
1 can coconut milk
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1 – 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 -2 apples, peeled, cored and cubed

Spray crock pot with MCT oil or rub with coconut oil. Combine rest of ingredients except the apple. Cook in slow cooker on medium for 2 hours. Turn down to low, add the apple and cook for 8 hours. Top with coconut or almond milk, if desired.

Bananas have amazing nutrients that have been scientifically proven to help with depression. They contain tryptophan and phenylalanine, which are essential for the brain to produce serotonin and dopamine transmitters that stimulate physical and mental activity and act as natural antidepressants. Dates, almonds, peanuts, sesame and pumpkin seeds also contain tryptophan. Bananas are a bit more starchy so that is why I don’t recommend them while you are working on stabilizing your weight. I don’t have more than one a day, and no bananas during detox, they are low water fruits and can be constipating.
