Watching Starches Phase 3

Dr. Simeons states that in Phase 3 you cannot eat sugars and starches. Sugar and starches can be hard to determine so read your labels! For more information on sugar read this article on Alternative Names for Sugar.

It is important that you watch starch and sugar religiously during the 3 weeks. Eat anything else you want but know that as soon as fats and starch are combined your weight is very likely to get out of hand.

Potatoes, grains, bread, and pastries are your obvious starches and consuming them can be dangerous. You will also need to watch your vegetables. The main veggies to be avoided are the starchier vegetables such as all potatoes, corn, carrots, squashes, beans, peas, and lentils. Many root vegetables (things that grow underground like potatoes and beets) will be higher in sugar/starch.

It may not always be that easy to see the starches. Many times there will be starches where you don’t expect to find them. Sometimes they tend to sneak starches as a thickener and many times you will find starch in processed food. One example – lettuce in a bag found in your produce section contains starch to keep the lettuce fresher longer! So be careful and buy fresh organic produce and check all food labels!

    Hi Jan, Love your articles!

I am on phase 3 and when I started I was 118. That was this past Sunday morning. I weighed on Monday and was up 4 pounds. I freaked out. I had not eaten any sugars or starch's. I had drank a lot and not gone to the bathroom, so figured water gain. Had a steak day on Tuesday, was down 2 pounds. Then just watched it all day yesterday again. I did eat some chicken chop suey at the mall and eggs and bacon for breakfast. Today I was 125 and my hands and eyes were puffy and I felt miserable. I immediately took a water pill. WHEW!!

I have been eating raw macadamia nuts, but didn't think that would be an issue. Anyway, today I am very nervous about why I am constantly gaining weight. Do you have any idea's at all. I could sure use all the help I can get right now.

    Thanks,

    Tammy

Tammy: It sounds like water retention. Are you ovulating or PMS? I always gain at least 5 lbs in water weight during both. The Mac nuts are of no affect, it will definitely be a sugar or hormones causing this big of a jump. Let me know. Also make sure you are staying at 1500 calories in Phase 3.

Keep me posted we will monitor and make sure, there are usually only a few things that will cause this and if handled correctly will not affect your results. Great job at hitting 118! 🙂 You will see it again. Its just a fluke and my guess hormones causing the water retention, unless you have gone over on calories?

Hi! I just found your site today and, boy, am I happy to meet you all!
My first question for today is:
How is Ezekiel bread not a starch for P3? I am going into P3 for the second round tomorrow and am assimilating your info for this round.
    Thanks!
    Debra
