Save your Fruit for In Between Meals

Carol’s Quick Tips # 37

I do not eat fruit with my meals. The sugars in the fruits require a different type of enzyme for digestion than vegetables require. When you mix them together in your stomach, they fight for digestive enzymes and typically the vegetables will win. Then the fruits will go partially undigested and begin to ferment which can lead to intestinal problems. A rule of thumb for me is to eat fruit at least 30 minutes before my main meal. I also notice that eating an apple before a meal also keeps me from over-eating so I do this a lot before going out for dinner.
